Mystery Molecules

Starters for AS Chemistry

Fifty starter exercises to engage your students. Each activity lasts 5-10 minutes and is provided in PowerPoint format - ideal for use on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Students try to guess the mystery molecule from a series of 5 clues which steadily narrow down the possible options.

"Excellent revision/starter/plenary activity to be used with both AS and A2 students. Useful to quickly analyse student understanding of the course."
Debra Leigh, Chemistry teacher

Very good idea - a 'fun' way to get students thinking about several topics. Very concise, yet answering the questions requires knowledge of a wide range of topics.
Chris Workman, Science teacher

What do teachers have to say about this resource? (2883)
"I like this resource a lot!" — Mike Stephens, ZigZag Director
"The material is presented in an enjoyable quiz or brainteaser style, is very concise, and yet answering the questions requires knowledge of a wide range of topics." — C Workman, Science Teacher and Independent Reviewer
"The PowerPoints could be used as starters at the beginning of A level chemistry lessons. This would give students a challenge at the start of the lesson and revise previously taught molecules. The resource also works fine with the chemistry specifications if used as a revision technique." — J Jenkins, Chemistry Teacher and Independent Reviewer
"Excellent revision/plenary activity to be used with both AS/A2 students and will be relevant to all examination boards... This resource saves time for teachers, because constructing the 'mystery style question' is time consuming, but the exercises are useful to quickly analyse student understanding of the course." — D Leigh, Chemistry Teacher and Independent Reviewer
